We recommend an irrigation system, if at all possible.

Initial watering should be done by hand and over the entire area to make sure that all areas are thoroughly wet before sprinklers are used as a primary watering source.

The first three weeks are very critical for your lawn establishment. After installing new sod it is imperative to keep sod so wet that the area is fully saturated down 4” into the ground.

Watering Schedule

To gauge watering, simply place an empty can about 6’ away from sprinkler. When there is 2" inches of water in the can, it is time to move the sprinkler to the next area. Areas along sidewalks, driveways and patios, where heat is reflected will dry out more quickly and will require deeper watering.

lawn being wateredAfter two mowings the yard is established. Deep watering is still suggested, light water will only promote a shallow root system. Established yards still must receive 2” of water per week during dry conditions. The first year new lawns may require more water than older lawns.

Your sodded lawn is a living breathing plant and must be cared for as such. It requires proper water, maintenance and either professional chemical fertilization and weed control or we highly recommend the 5-step Scotts do-it-yourself program. Maintenance must be carried out no matter which method you choose in order to keep your lawn in a healthy condition.

A “pre-emergence” is applied to your grass during the last part of March or very early April to prevent annual weeds such as crabgrass and foxtail during the drought-like heat of late June and July. If you allow your ground to become too dry, this breaks down the barrier of the “pre-emergence” so therefore your crabgrass and foxtail can germinate. This is a very sensitive time for your lawn, due the fact that crabgrass and foxtail can spread easily. It is impossible for any type of warranty to be issued by Gerdes Turfs Farm, Inc.

Remember water is essential. A lush well-kept lawn is method of preventing weed growth. It is more difficult for the foreign growth to intrude if there are not any sparse, dried out, or undernourished areas to invade. Always keep your mower blades sharp, thus preventing damage to the individual blades of grass while cutting.

Broadleaf control should be applied to your lawn middle to late May. Be sure to execute the precise recommendation of the follow-up care preceding any chemical applications whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or your lawn is maintained by a professional company. Either way you want a professional-looking result. Please set your mowing height between 3”-3 ½” for every cutting except the last cutting of the year in which you could set your mower at 2”. Allow your lawn to dry before cutting. If it is your first cutting do not allow lawn to dry out totally. Avoid traffic on your newly laid yard for about three weeks. Your lawn can be mowed approximately 10-14 days after installation. Check for root attachment by sporadically trying to pull sod up from the ground.
